What we Believe

We exist to Love God, Love People, and Love Life!

We exist to build an authentic community that genuinely loves people. We model and celebrate a transformative life, growing closer to God, guided by the Word of God and powered by the Holy Spirit. We make Jesus known where we live, work, and play.

The words of Jesus are clear that loving God and loving people are the greatest commandments. As people who are endeavoring to authentically live our lives growing closer to God, it is our hearts desire to walk in the words of our Lord and Saviour and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 22:36-40

As a people we:

  • We worship Jesus.

  • We live by God’s Spirit.

  • We love people.

  • We are a work in progress.

  • We are better together.

  • We love life!

We Value

Relationship over religion

We do not live by certain rules in order for Him to love us more - we keep His commandments because of our love for Him.

Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:19-26, James 2:14-26

Grace over judgment

We prioritze forgiveness, kindness and compassion over criticism and judgment - reflecting the transformative power of divine love.

Matthew 7:1-2, James 2:13, Ephesians 2:4-5, John 8:11

Empowerment over willpower

We rely on God’s spiritual gifting and fruit to manifest His kingdom on earth rather than trusting in human strength.

Philippians 4:13, Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

Sonrise is a part of the Foursquare family

The Foursquare Church exists to glorify God and advance His kingdom. Jesus Christ’s command is to preach the Gospel and make disciples of all nations (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19). Therefore, we are “dedicated unto the cause of inter-denominational and worldwide evangelism.” These words express our spirit and our focus.

“Foursquare” is a Biblical term used of the tabernacle in the Book of Exodus, of the Temple of the Lord in Ezekiel 40:47, and of Heaven, as described in the book of the Revelation. The term “Foursquare Gospel” was given in the inspiration of revival to the denomination’s founder, Aimee Semple McPherson, during an evangelistic campaign in Oakland, Calif., in 1922. It represents that which is equally balanced on all sides, established and enduring.

THE SAVIOR

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him…” –Isaiah 53:5 (Titus 2:14, Isaiah 55:7, Hebrews 7:25, Isaiah 1:18)

THE BAPTIZER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

“For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit… you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” –Acts 1:5,8 (John 14:16-17, Acts 2:4, Acts 8:17, Acts 10:44-46, 1 Corinthians 3:16)

THE HEALER

“He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses…” –Matthew 8:17 (Mark 16:17-18, Matthew 9:5-6, Acts 4:29-30)

THE SOON-COMING KING

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout… the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” –1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (Titus 2:12-13, Matthew 24:36-44, Hebrews 9:28, Luke 19:13, Luke 12:35-37.)

Foursquare History

Sonrise is part of a larger family of churches (a “Denomination”), called Foursquare. Foursquare is a Pentecostal movement that resulted from the dynamic evangelistic ministry of the founder, Aimee Semple McPherson. In 1915, God called her to “preach the Word.” Aimee began traveling and holding crusades in the United States where many people were saved and healed. She was a powerful communicator and God used her in mighty ways. The first Foursquare church was opened on January 1, 1923.

Aimee traveled and preached the Foursquare Gospel, which teaches Jesus Christ is: The Savior, The Baptizer with The Holy Spirit, The Healer, and The Soon and Coming King. As Aimee continued to train and send out preachers and missionaries, the need for a connection and organization became apparent. Today the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel spans the world, with more than 1,700 churches in the United States and more than 66,000 churches globally in 140 countries.
